Movie Review - 47 Ronin

Why was that pirate included in the pictures?
Keanu has a new movie!  Woo!  How does he rate?

47 Ronin is a retelling of the true story of samurai who went against the odds to avenge their master.  A mystical twist is given to the tale with the inclusion of Kai, the mysterious half breed who joined the household of said master.  He and the other samurai face a treacherous lord intent on taking over their master's domain and must contend with dark magic as well.

47 Ronin is an enjoyable action story.  Great swordplay, good fantasy, decent effects.  It's not too deep but it is a fun ride.  The romance may have fallen flat for some but I suppose the characters are trying to show as much dignity as possible.  I would have preferred a little more magic but perhaps too much would mess with the historical aspect.

Keanu Reeves gets top billing but he doesn't really display much charisma or presence.  It is Oishi, played by Hiroyuki Sanada who is more or less the main character as he takes the center stage.  Tadanobu Asano as Kira the usurper is satisfyingly smarting and evil and his witch, played by Rinko Kikuchi, is freaky and seductively scary.

The cultural aspect might jar folks who don't know about the ritual of seppuku. It would be said that justice isn't done in favor of honor.  But putting forth that aspect is necessary as it is historical and also fact.

47 Ronin deserves to be enjoyed so watch it if you can.

SPOILERS!!!  Don't read unless you've seen the movie or what will that with demon fox say?

Sad that those samurai who died in the ambush won't be remembered among the 47 as they weren't in the sheet they signed.  This included the funny husky guy.

The mystical swords ultimately did nothing for the other samurai.  Only Kai's was used against the witch.  Even the empty armor behemoth was destroyed by a blast, not a mystic sword.

The ritual the witch did with Kira's heart and the spider said they were linked.  I thought it would the case of one life being tied to the other and rendering them both immortal in a way.  It didn't go that path.

Yeah, Kira's head gets to be shown in a lot of villages, haha.
